Chest Acne in Busan Seomyeon, the acne nobody photographs.

Chest and back breakouts get less attention than facial acne and scar just as readily. They also have a second cause facial acne does not — sweat, friction and occlusion from clothing and sport — which changes what actually works. At our Busan, Korea clinic. English, 日本語 and 中文 consults. Medically reviewed by Dr. Jeong Heon Lee, MD.

Does This Sound Familiar?

What Busan patients ask before treating body acne.

  • Why does body acne take longer to clear than facial acne?
  • Is this acne or folliculitis?
  • Do body washes actually help?
  • Will the marks fade on their own?

All five come up most weeks in Busan. The sections below answer them in order — why body skin is slower, the diagnosis that changes everything, what washes can and cannot do, and honest expectations for marks.

What Drives Body Acne

Acne, plus sweat and friction.

Chest and back skin has larger follicles, thicker tissue and a daily exposure facial skin does not face: hours under fabric, sweat that stays trapped, and friction from straps, collars and equipment.

So body acne is usually acne plus an occlusion problem, and treating only one half explains why so many patients improve partly and stall. At our Busan, Korea clinic the assessment separates true inflammatory acne from folliculitis and from friction-driven breakouts, because the third needs habit change more than medication.

How It Works

The science, without the hype.

Separate the causes, then treat each.

01

Distinguish the type

Inflammatory acne, folliculitis and friction-driven breakouts look alike and need different treatment.

02

Treat medically

Genuine body acne responds to medical treatment; body skin often needs longer than facial skin.

03

Remove the occlusion

Sweat trapped under fabric drives much of this — showering promptly and changing what is worn matters.

04

Address the marks

Body skin marks readily and marks persist longer here than on the face.

Three Presentations

They look similar and respond to entirely different things, which is why assessment comes first.

The Honest Arc

What treatment honestly delivers.

When What you will notice What to do
Week 1–4 Habit changes help friction-driven cases quickly; medical treatment is establishing. Shower promptly after sweating; change what sits against the skin.
Month 1–3 Inflammatory lesions reduce; body skin responds more slowly than facial skin. Complete prescribed treatment for its full duration.
Afterwards Marks are assessed once active breakouts are controlled. Body marks persist longer than facial ones and need patience.
Honest Suitability

Who it suits in Busan — and who should wait.

A good fit if you…

  • Chest and back breakouts that have not responded to body washes
  • Breakouts appearing under straps, collars or sportswear
  • Uncertainty about whether this is acne or folliculitis
  • Marks left on the body by past breakouts

Better to wait if you…

  • Pregnancy — several acne medications are contraindicated and the plan changes
  • Suspected folliculitis — diagnosed first, since acne treatment can worsen it
  • Expecting facial-speed results — body skin responds more slowly, and we say so

After your treatment

  • Shower promptly after sweating rather than sitting in damp clothing
  • Change fabrics and straps that sit against affected areas
  • Complete prescribed treatment for its stated duration
  • SPF on exposed chest skin; marks darken with sun

Honest limits

  • Body skin responds more slowly than facial skin — months rather than weeks
  • Folliculitis worsens under standard acne treatment, which is why diagnosis comes first
  • Body marks persist longer than facial marks and are treated after control, not during
Our Medical Team

Why does body acne take longer to clear than facial acne?

Larger follicles, thicker skin and a daily environment facial skin never faces. Chest and back follicles are bigger and sit deeper, so lesions are larger and take longer to resolve; the skin is thicker, so topical treatment penetrates less effectively; and the area spends hours under fabric with trapped sweat, which keeps the conditions favourable for new breakouts. At our Busan clinic I tell body acne patients to expect months rather than weeks, and to treat the occlusion side seriously — the patients who change their post-exercise habits improve visibly faster than those who only take the medication.

Body acne is the condition patients apologise for bringing up, and it scars exactly as readily as the acne on their face. The difference is that nobody was watching, so it was left longer.

Quick Answers

Is this acne or folliculitis?

They look alike and need opposite handling, which is why the distinction matters more than the name. Folliculitis is follicular infection and can worsen under standard acne treatment, while genuine body acne needs exactly that treatment. Clues include uniformity of the lesions, itch rather than tenderness, and a pattern following sweat and occlusion closely. At our Busan clinic the assessment separates them before anything is prescribed, because months spent on the wrong treatment is the common story patients arrive with.
