Who is low in vitamin D, what does the injection do, and what does it cost in Busan?
Vitamin D
is made in the skin by ultraviolet B, and a modern life, indoors, sunscreened, in a northern winter or a Korean office, makes little of it; deficiency is the rule rather than the exception in adults who are tested, and more so in darker skin, in people who cover, and in anyone the doctor at Boom Dermatology tells to wear sunscreen every day, which is everyone. It matters for bone and muscle, for immunity, for mood and energy through the winter, and, of interest in a skin clinic, for the skin barrier and for wound healing after procedures. The injection
is cholecalciferol, vitamin D3, given into the muscle as a depot that releases over two to three months, which solves the problem that a daily tablet depends on remembering it.
It is prescribed, not sold: the doctor, an internal medicine specialist, asks about symptoms, sun, diet, supplements and the conditions that change how vitamin D is handled, and sends a blood test
where the level is in doubt or where a high dose is planned, because vitamin D can be overdone and the level is the honest guide. A patient with a known deficiency from home can be injected on the day; a patient who is unsure is tested first, with the result in a day or two. It sits alongside the other drips on the IV hub, and alongside the thiamine drip
and the Signature IV
for a visitor restocking after a long winter; the sunscreen page
explains why a skin clinic sends you for vitamin D in the first place.

Questions, answered properly
How do I know if I am low?
Mostly you do not, which is the problem: tiredness, low mood, aches and frequent colds are the symptoms and they have other causes. A blood test for 25-hydroxyvitamin D settles it in a day or two, and at Boom Dermatology that is what the doctor orders when the level is in doubt, rather than injecting on a guess.
Injection or tablets, which is better?
Tablets work if you take them daily; the injection works whether you remember or not, which for most people makes it better. The injection is also the right tool for a real deficiency, where a loading dose is wanted. Either can be overdone, which is why the level guides both.
How often do I need it?
Every two to three months through the indoor months for most; by level for a deficiency. Our Seomyeon skin clinic tests once a year for anyone on maintenance so the dose stays right.
Can I have too much?
Yes: vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates, and excess raises blood calcium, which is why megadoses without a level are declined and why the doctor asks about supplements you already take. At the doses used here, guided by a test, it is safe.
Does sunscreen really cause deficiency?
It reduces the skin's production, and so does an indoor life, which is why the doctor at Boom Dermatology in Busan who tells you to wear sunscreen every day also tells you to keep your vitamin D up by other means. The sun damage you prevent is permanent; the vitamin D is a tablet or an injection.
