What is Helios Z, and what does it do?
Helios Z
is the newer generation of the Korean Q-switched Nd:YAG platform behind Helios 4: the same 1064 nm and 532 nm wavelengths and the same nanosecond pulse, delivered with higher peak power and a more uniform beam, so each pulse shatters pigment more completely and the course needed for a stubborn spot is shorter. It is still a toning laser, with no downtime and a protocol of spaced sessions, but it sits a tier above Helios 4 for consolidated pigment, deeper sun spots and tone that has stopped improving on the standard device.
At Boom Dermatology in Seomyeon, Helios Z is the step the doctor takes when the fifth-session photo on Helios 4 shows a plateau, and the first device for patients arriving with darker, well-defined spots and limited time. For the gentlest melasma protocol, Helios 4 at low fluence; for picosecond shattering of the hardest pigment, Picolo. Patients who ask for Revlite or PicoWay are shown what we use instead.

The visit
What happens at a Helios Z session in Seomyeon?
This is how a Helios Z visit runs at Boom Dermatology, a skin clinic in Seomyeon, Busan, from the first message to the review.
1
Message first
A daylight photo without make-up and what bothers you. The doctor replies with the device, the likely session count and the VAT-included price.
2
Consultation
Pigment is separated from redness, melasma is screened for, previous lasers and sun exposure are asked. Device and settings go on your record.
3
Cleanse and cool
Make-up off, eye shields on; cooling gel or numbing cream depending on the device.
4
Test pulses, then the pass
A few test pulses on the jawline to read the response, then the full pass by the doctor.
5
Out the door
Sunscreen before you leave; make-up from the same evening for toning, the next day for vascular work.
6
Review and rhythm
A photo at two to four weeks sets the interval; a review at the fifth session decides continue, stop or switch.
How does Boom Dermatology dose Helios Z?
Helios Z is dosed by fluence and spot size with test pulses; the extra power is used for completeness per pulse, not for a visible whitening endpoint.
Higher peak power
More energy in the same nanosecond pulse, so pigment fragments finer and clears faster between sessions.
532 nm for defined spots
Targeted pulses on freckles and sun spots that darken and flake within a week.
Three to four weeks apart
Three to five sessions; a photo at the third decides whether to continue or move to picosecond.

Questions, answered properly
Helios 4 or Helios Z: is the extra ₩110,000 worth it?
For defined, stubborn spots, yes: the higher power clears them in fewer sessions, so the course costs less in total. For diffuse dullness, no: Helios 4 does that job at ₩220,000 and the extra power adds nothing. The doctor at Boom Dermatology says which from your photo, and most patients move between the two across a course.
Is more power safe on Asian skin?
At 1064 nm, yes; the wavelength is the safety factor more than the power, and the doctor still works below the visible-whitening endpoint. 532 nm pulses are used only on defined spots after test pulses. The risk designed around at our Seomyeon skin clinic is the same on every device: post-inflammatory darkening.
How does it compare with the pico lasers?
Helios Z is the top of the Q-switched tier; Picolo and PicoHi are picosecond, a different pulse that shatters the hardest pigment finer still. For most stubborn sun spots Helios Z is enough; for pigment that survives it, or for ink, picosecond is next. Both are on the price list and switching costs nothing extra.
Will my stubborn spot finally go?
Most do, over three to five sessions, with a 532 nm targeted pulse where the spot is shallow. A spot that does not respond is photographed, re-read for melasma or a deeper lesion, and either moved to picosecond or treated as a lesion. We do not keep repeating a session that is not working.
Can I start on Z, or must I do Helios 4 first?
You can start on Z if the pigment is defined and your time is short; a visitor at Boom Dermatology in Busan with three weeks and dark spots usually does. Diffuse dullness and melasma-prone skin start on Helios 4.
