What is Sylfirm X, and what does it do?

Sylfirm X (Viol, Korea) is a microneedle radiofrequency device with two modes. Pulsed-wave delivers RF in very short bursts through insulated needles at a shallow depth, which selectively affects the abnormal, leaky vessels and the damaged basement membrane that sit under melasma and persistent redness, while leaving the pigment cells and the surrounding skin unheated. That is the mechanism no toning laser has, and why Sylfirm X is the device that can treat melasma and rosacea rather than only lighten them. Continuous-wave is conventional RF microneedling at adjustable depth, for pores, texture, acne scars and skin laxity.

At Boom Dermatology in Seomyeon, Sylfirm X is the centre of the melasma plan, alongside low-fluence Helios toning, sunscreen and topicals; the answer for redness that vascular lasers keep bringing back; and a pores-and-firmness RF for skin that is too reactive for heat-heavy devices. For deeper scars, Potenza or Scorpio. Patients who ask for Virtue RF are shown what we use instead.

What Busan patients ask before Sylfirm X
  • Why does RF work on melasma when lasers made mine worse?
  • Is this the same as Potenza or Morpheus8?
  • How much does it hurt, and what is the downtime?
  • Will it also tighten and shrink pores?
  • How many sessions, and does melasma come back?

All of these come up most weeks at our Seomyeon skin clinic. The page answers them in order.

03 The visit

What happens at a Sylfirm X session in Seomyeon?

This is how a Sylfirm X visit runs at Boom Dermatology, a skin clinic in Seomyeon, Busan, from the first message to the review.

1

Message first

A daylight photo without make-up and what bothers you. The doctor replies with the device, the likely session count and the VAT-included price.

2

Consultation

Pigment is separated from redness, melasma is screened for, previous lasers and sun exposure are asked. Device and settings go on your record.

3

Cleanse and cool

Make-up off, eye shields on; cooling gel or numbing cream depending on the device.

4

Test pulses, then the pass

A few test pulses on the jawline to read the response, then the full pass by the doctor.

5

Out the door

Sunscreen before you leave; make-up from the same evening for toning, the next day for vascular work.

6

Review and rhythm

A photo at two to four weeks sets the interval; a review at the fifth session decides continue, stop or switch.

How does Boom Dermatology dose Sylfirm X?

Sylfirm X is dosed by mode, depth and energy per area; melasma and redness get the pulsed mode shallow, pores and scars the continuous mode deeper.

Pulsed-wave, shallow

Microsecond RF bursts through insulated needles at the level of the basement membrane; vessels and leak treated, pigment untouched.

Continuous, deeper

Standard RF microneedling at 0.5–3 mm for pores, scars and laxity.

Four weeks apart

Three to five sessions; the melasma photo at the third decides the rhythm.

07 Questions, answered properly

Why does RF work on melasma when lasers made mine worse?

Because melasma is not only pigment; under it sit abnormal, leaky vessels and a damaged basement membrane that keep feeding the pigment cells. A laser heats the pigment, which can provoke more. Sylfirm X in pulsed mode treats the vessels and the membrane and leaves the pigment cells alone, so the melasma loses its supply instead of being irritated. At Boom Dermatology it is used with low-fluence toning, sunscreen and topicals, never as a one-device cure.

Is this the same as Potenza or Morpheus8?

Same family, different setting. Potenza and Morpheus8 are continuous RF microneedling at depth, for scars, pores and laxity. Sylfirm X has that mode too, but its pulsed-wave shallow mode is what sets it apart, and that is the mode we use for melasma and redness. If your problem is deep scars, Potenza; if it is melasma or rosacea, Sylfirm X; if both, the doctor at our Seomyeon skin clinic sequences them.

How much does it hurt, and what is the downtime?

With numbing cream, a warm, prickling pass that most patients rate as mild; the pulsed mode is shallower and easier than deep RF. Redness and pinpoint marks for one to two days, make-up the next morning, a flight after 24 hours.

Will it also tighten and shrink pores?

In the continuous mode, yes: conventional RF microneedling tightens pores and firms the skin over a course, and on reactive skin it is gentler than heat-heavy devices. The two modes can be used in the same session where the face needs both.

How many sessions, and does melasma come back?

Three to five sessions four weeks apart calm melasma and redness; melasma is controlled, not cured, and returns with sun and hormones, so a maintenance session every three to six months and daily sunscreen hold it. Patients at Boom Dermatology in Busan are told this before the first session, with a photo plan to prove it is working.
