What is Moxi, and what does it do?

Moxi (Sciton) is a non-ablative fractional laser at 1927 nm, the thulium wavelength that water in the upper dermis absorbs strongly. It coagulates microscopic columns in the top layers without removing skin, so pigment in the epidermis is lifted out with the flaking over the following days and the dermis beneath is stimulated to remodel. The result is clearer, brighter, finer skin after a few days of mild downtime, which is why it became the laser for patients who want to stay ahead of ageing rather than reverse a decade of it, and the standard partner to BBL Hero.

At Boom Dermatology in Seomyeon, Moxi is what we suggest for sun damage with texture, for the first laser of a patient in their thirties, and for pigment in the upper skin that toning has brightened but not cleared. For deeper scars, RF microneedling; for colour alone, BBL Hero or toning; for the ablative option with a week of downtime, CO2 fractional. Patients who ask for Fotona fractional or Pearl are shown what we use instead.

What Busan patients ask before Moxi
  • What is prejuvenation, and am I too young or too old for it?
  • Moxi, Fraxel, CO2: what is the difference in plain terms?
  • How much flaking, and can I fly on day three?
  • Is it worth ₩770,000 against a toning course?
  • Should I pair it with BBL?

All of these come up most weeks at our Seomyeon skin clinic. The page answers them in order.

02 Who it suits

Who is Moxi for?

Good candidates

  • Sun damage with texture: fine lines, dullness, uneven pigment together
  • Patients in their thirties and forties wanting a first laser
  • Upper-skin pigment that toning has not cleared
  • Melasma-prone skin at low settings, with the doctor's judgement
  • Yearly skin-quality maintenance

We will suggest something else

  • Deep acne scars, which want Potenza or CO2
  • Diffuse redness, which wants a vascular wavelength or BBL
  • Tanned or sunburned skin; wait four weeks
  • An event inside a week; the flaking is visible
  • Isotretinoin recently; pregnancy

03 The visit

What happens at a Moxi session in Seomyeon?

This is how a Moxi visit runs at Boom Dermatology, a skin clinic in Seomyeon, Busan, from the first message to the review.

1

Message first

A daylight photo without make-up and what bothers you. The doctor replies with the device, the likely session count and the VAT-included price.

2

Consultation

Pigment is separated from redness, melasma is screened for, previous lasers and sun exposure are asked. Device and settings go on your record.

3

Cleanse and cool

Make-up off, eye shields on; cooling gel or numbing cream depending on the device.

4

Test pulses, then the pass

A few test pulses on the jawline to read the response, then the full pass by the doctor.

5

Out the door

Sunscreen before you leave; make-up from the same evening for toning, the next day for vascular work.

6

Review and rhythm

A photo at two to four weeks sets the interval; a review at the fifth session decides continue, stop or switch.

How does Boom Dermatology dose Moxi?

Moxi is dosed by energy level and density; the doctor chooses the level to the skin and the calendar, and writes it on your record.

Non-ablative columns

Coagulated micro-columns in the upper skin; nothing removed, so healing is flaking rather than wound care.

Level to the calendar

Lower levels for two to three days of downtime; higher for five and a bigger result.

Three, then yearly

Three sessions four to six weeks apart, then one or two a year.

07 Questions, answered properly

What is prejuvenation, and am I the right age?

Treating skin before the damage is obvious, so that it never becomes obvious. Moxi suits a thirty-year-old with early sun damage as well as a fifty-year-old with a lot of it; the difference is the level and the number of sessions. The doctor at Boom Dermatology tells you which you are from a daylight photo.

Moxi, Fraxel, CO2: what is the difference?

Depth and whether skin is removed. Moxi is non-ablative at 1927 nm: upper skin, nothing removed, three to five days of flaking. The 1550 nm Fraxel-type lasers go deeper, still non-ablative, with more swelling. CO2 fractional is ablative: columns of skin are vaporised, a week or more of raw healing, the biggest result for deep scars. At our Seomyeon skin clinic Moxi is the first of the three most patients should have.

How much flaking, and can I fly on day three?

Fine, dry flaking from day two to day five, like a mild peel, covered by moisturiser and make-up. Flying on day three is fine; the cabin air makes the flaking feel tighter, so bring a thick moisturiser. Photographs are better left to day seven.

Is it worth ₩770,000 against a toning course?

They do different things. Toning at ₩165,000 to ₩220,000 a session brightens tone over five to ten sessions with no downtime; Moxi at ₩770,000 clears upper-skin pigment and improves texture in one session with a few days of flaking. A visitor with three days in Busan and sun damage gets more from one Moxi than from two toning sessions; a resident with time gets the course. We will say which applies to you.

Should I pair it with BBL?

If the face is red as well as brown, yes: BBL Hero first for colour, Moxi after for texture and pigment, one downtime of three to five days, ₩1,210,000 together. If the problem is texture and pigment without redness, Moxi alone. Patients at Boom Dermatology in Busan on a short trip usually book the pair on day one.
