Patients hesitant about botox because of what it does to expression are frequently the best candidates for this, and are put off by the name. It is worth separating the two properly.

What makes it different from regular botox

Depth and target. Conventional botox is placed into muscle to block contraction. Microbotox is placed intradermally — within the skin itself, above the muscle layer — across dozens of shallow points. At that depth it reaches sebaceous and sweat glands and the very superficial muscle fibres attached to the dermis, without reaching the muscles that produce expression.

What does it actually treat?

Three things. Sebaceous output, which is the fastest and most reliable effect — patients notice their skin looking less shiny by mid-afternoon within two weeks. How long before it works, and how long does it last?

Two weeks for the oil reduction to be noticeable, and around three months of effect — shorter than muscle botox because sebaceous glands recover faster than muscle rebuilds. Why does the name mislead people?

Because it implies a scaled-down version of a treatment patients already have an opinion about. Anyone hesitant about botox because of what it does to expression hears microbotox and assumes a milder version of the same trade — less movement lost for less effect. That is not what happens, and the misunderstanding costs a specific group of patients a treatment that would suit them well. Describing it as an intradermal oil and texture treatment that happens to use the same molecule is more accurate than anything the name conveys.

Where does it fit in a plan?

Early, and often as a seasonal component rather than a permanent fixture. It also pairs naturally with pigment work, since controlling oil improves how the skin tolerates a toning course, and with lifting or filler, neither of which it interacts with.

What does the treatment feel like?

Can it be combined with regular botox?

What are the honest limits?

It does not shrink pore size, which is largely fixed — it reduces how visible they are by reducing what stretches them. It does nothing for texture, scarring or pigment.
