Skincare around treatment in Busan Seomyeon, and what to pause before you come.

A few products genuinely change how skin responds to treatment. Most do not. This sets out what to stop and for how long, what to keep going, and why some patients need to remove products rather than add them.

Patients arrive with routines of six to twelve steps and no clear sense of which interact with what they are booking. Four categories matter; the rest can carry on unchanged.

Does This Sound Familiar?

What patients ask about their routine

  • Should I stop my retinol before the appointment?
  • I use a lot of actives. Is that a problem?
  • My skin is irritated and I do not know which product is doing it.
  • When can I go back to my normal routine afterwards?
  • Do I need to buy Korean skincare?

All five come up most weeks, and the third is the one where treatment sometimes starts with subtraction. The sections below go through the categories.

Retinoids — pause around laser

Retinol, tretinoin and adapalene thin the stratum corneum and increase turnover, which raises sensitivity to laser and to any resurfacing. Pause two to three days before and after a laser session, and longer for stronger prescriptions. Around injectables they matter far less — botox and filler are unaffected, and only the injection sites themselves need a day.

Acids — same principle, shorter window

Glycolic, salicylic and lactic acids also increase surface sensitivity. Two to three days either side of laser is adequate for over-the-counter strengths; a clinical peel needs longer. What matters more than the timing is honesty about how much you use — a patient exfoliating daily has a compromised barrier before treatment begins, and that changes the settings rather than only the aftercare.

Isotretinoin — a longer gap and a real one

Oral isotretinoin affects wound healing and sebaceous gland function for months after stopping. A documented gap before resurfacing, scar work or threads is standard practice, and it is not a formality — treating too soon carries a genuine scarring risk. Disclose recent or current use even if you stopped some time ago, since the interval is measured in months rather than weeks.

Brightening agents — discuss rather than stop

Hydroquinone and prescribed brightening agents are frequently part of a melasma plan rather than something to pause. Stopping them unilaterally before a pigment course removes half the treatment. Bring them or photograph the labels — what looks like a cosmetic serum is sometimes a prescription formulation, and the distinction changes the plan.

What to keep going throughout

Sunscreen, without exception and more diligently than before. Moisturiser, particularly after any laser. A gentle cleanser. Those three carry the whole routine through a treatment period and nothing else is required. Patients frequently ask what to add and the more common answer is what to remove — see sun protection.

Why does the routine matter more than the products?

Because barrier condition is what determines how skin tolerates energy, and barrier condition comes from cumulative habit rather than from any single item. Two patients using the same retinoid — one nightly on top of daily acids, one twice weekly with a good moisturiser — arrive with entirely different skin, and the settings chosen for them differ accordingly. That is why the consultation asks what you use and how often rather than only what brand, and why an honest answer serves you better than an edited one.

How does this differ for a visiting patient?

Timing gets tighter. A resident can pause actives three days before an appointment without effort; someone flying in has to plan it from home, and the pause needs to start before the flight rather than on arrival. Message us your treatment plan before you travel and you will be told what to stop and when — see booking in English. Patients who arrive having used a strong retinoid the night before frequently find a laser session postponed, which on a five-day trip is an expensive rescheduling.

When treatment starts by subtracting

A meaningful proportion of patients arrive with barrier damage from over-treatment at home — daily acids, strong retinoids, harsh cleansers and a device or two, producing skin that is simultaneously irritated and unresponsive. In those cases the first intervention is stopping most of it for two to four weeks. Treating over a damaged barrier produces worse results and higher pigmentation risk.

When can I restart after treatment?

After botox and lifting, the next day. After boosters, once injection points have closed, usually the following morning. After laser toning, two to three days for actives. After resurfacing, only what you were given until flaking finishes, then reintroduce one product at a time rather than the whole routine at once.

Do I need to buy Korean skincare?

No. Korean formulations are generally light, well tolerated and reasonably priced, which is why patients pick them up here — but nothing about treatment requires them. What does not translate well is the layered routine designed around a climate with a dry winter, applied unchanged to a humid summer or to a different climate at home — see skin treatment for expats.

What should I bring or photograph?

Everything you use regularly, or a photograph of each label. Active ingredients and concentrations are what matter, and patients frequently cannot recall them accurately — a serum described as vitamin C may be at a concentration that changes the plan. This takes two minutes at home and saves guesswork at consultation — see what to bring.

Our Medical Team

Who will actually treat you at JRYN Seomyeon?

A doctor, in person, every time — never a nurse or a coordinator. JRYN Seomyeon has three doctors, and the clinic was founded by Dr. Jeong Heon Lee, who still consults here. What you actually need is decided during the consultation after your skin is examined, not from a fixed package chosen in advance.

Three doctors, one standard of care.

Every treatment plan at JRYN Seomyeon is decided and performed in person by one of our doctors — led by Dr. Jeong Heon Lee, founder of JRYN Dermatology.

From the Founder

The consultation is the treatment.

Most patients arrive asking for a specific treatment. My job is to check whether it is the right one for what they actually have. Getting that wrong is the most common mistake I correct.

Before You Book

Questions patients ask first.

Sometimes. Laser and microneedling temporarily increase penetration, which is why what you apply afterwards is specified rather than left open. It also means an active applied too soon reaches deeper than intended.

Generally yes, pausing two to three days around laser. Higher concentrations sting on compromised skin, so it goes back after moisturiser and sunscreen have been reintroduced.

Microcurrent and LED are usually fine. Home microneedling and IPL devices should stop two weeks before any clinical treatment, and their use is worth mentioning since they affect the skin more than patients assume.

Not necessarily. What matters is what is in them and whether your barrier tolerates it. A simple routine used consistently outperforms an elaborate one used erratically.

Not within a week of laser or injectables. Extraction and manual exfoliation both leave the skin more reactive than it appears.

Fish oil and high-dose vitamin E increase bruising and can pause a few days before injectables. Prescribed medication is never stopped without discussing it with the doctor who prescribed it.

Not for most people and not during a treatment period. Over-cleansing is one of the more common causes of the barrier damage described above.

Stop everything except a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen for two weeks, then reintroduce one product every five days. It is slower than a consultation answer and it is the only reliable way to find out.
