A consultation that concludes with wait or no is a normal outcome and costs nothing. This page sets out when that happens, so the reasoning is visible before you sit down rather than only after.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Elective treatment is declined during both, without exception. There is no evidence of harm from most of what is offered here at cosmetic doses, and there is also no safety data supporting it — a gap that does not justify unknown risk for an elective procedure. Recent sun exposure

Postpones any pigment treatment rather than reducing its settings. A laser cannot distinguish a tan from target pigment, so treating recently exposed skin means the epidermis absorbs far more than intended. Four weeks without significant exposure is the standard, and treatment is deferred rather than compromised — see sun protection. Exposure is assessed at consultation rather than self-reported, since patients consistently underestimate how much they have had.

Active acne before scar work

Because treating scars while breakouts continue means treating a moving target, and resurfacing inflamed skin raises pigmentation risk considerably on higher Fitzpatrick types. Three to six months of control comes first, then a scar course — see adult acne in your thirties.

Unstable weight

Particularly during ongoing loss on GLP-1 medication or any significant programme. Restoring volume that is still being lost means paying twice for the same result. Waiting until weight has been stable for around three months produces a plan that holds — see weight loss and facial volume.

An imminent event

Within three weeks for anything injectable, within six for threads or resurfacing, and never for a first-time treatment close to a date. The margin for correction disappears before the risk does — see timing around an event.

Recent isotretinoin, or unclear medication

Oral isotretinoin affects healing for months after stopping, and a documented gap before resurfacing, scar work or threads is standard rather than a formality. What can usually proceed anyway

Most of these restrictions are specific rather than blanket, and something appropriate is often available even when the requested treatment is not. Recent sun rules out pigment work and affects nothing else — botox, filler and lifting all proceed normally. Active acne rules out scar resurfacing while boosters and oil control remain useful. An imminent event rules out swelling rather than every treatment. Being told no to one thing rarely means no to everything, and the alternative is offered rather than withheld.

When the expectation does not match what is possible

A request for a narrower nose, a smaller face, complete scar clearance or a specific photograph. When nothing needs doing

The outcome patients least expect. Skin in good condition, laxity that does not yet exist, a concern that is anatomy rather than change. When the patient is not certain

Uncertainty is a reason to wait rather than to be reassured.
