Onda body contouring in Busan, and how Coolwaves actually work.
Microwave fat reduction for abdomen, arms and thighs — how Onda differs from fat-freezing, realistic session counts and results, and published prices. From The Boom Dermatology, a skin clinic in Seomyeon, Busan.
Onda is the device our body-contouring programme is built around, and it deserves a proper explanation rather than a brochure line. Its Coolwaves — microwaves at a frequency absorbed preferentially by fat — do something most body devices cannot: reduce localized fat, tighten the overlying skin and improve cellulite texture in the same pass, without surgery and without the week of recovery. This guide is the honest deep-dive: the physics in plain English, how Onda compares with fat-freezing and with liposuction, which areas respond and which do not, realistic session counts and timelines, and exactly what a session feels like from the bed.
The fat is local. The solutions on offer are not.
One area — lower abdomen, arms, outer thighs — has ignored every workout you have thrown at it.
You looked at fat-freezing and then at the stories about it, and hesitated.
Liposuction feels like too large an answer for too small a problem.
You want the honest session count and week-by-week timeline before spending anything.
You have a fixed budget and want the published per-session price, not a package pitch.
All five are the exact conversations that precede an Onda plan. Here is everything we would tell you in the consultation room, written down first.
What is Onda, and what are Coolwaves in Seomyeon, Busan?
Onda is an Italian-built body-contouring device whose working tool is microwaves at 2.45 GHz — a frequency chosen because subcutaneous fat absorbs it preferentially. DEKA, the manufacturer, brands these Coolwaves: the energy passes through the skin surface with limited absorption, then deposits its heat selectively in the fat layer beneath, while the handpiece's contact-cooling protects the skin throughout.
That selectivity is the whole idea. Older heat-based body treatments warmed everything on the way down and relied on depth control; Coolwaves are tuned to the tissue itself, so the fat layer takes the thermal load while skin stays comfortable. It is the same targeting logic that makes lasers work by wavelength
— applied, unusually, to body fat.
How do microwaves actually reduce fat?
Heat, delivered selectively, does two things to adipose tissue. Fat cells stressed past their thermal tolerance undergo programmed breakdown, and their contents are cleared gradually through the lymphatic system over the following weeks — which is why Onda results build at the six-to-twelve-week mark rather than on the bed. Nothing is vacuumed or excised; your own metabolism does the removal on its own schedule.
The second effect is the bonus most fat treatments lack: the same thermal energy stimulates collagen in the dermis and the fibrous bands running through fat — the architecture behind cellulite. The practical result is modest simultaneous tightening and texture improvement, so the treated area shrinks without acquiring the deflated look, a mechanism cousin to how collagen treatment works
on the face.
How does Onda compare with fat-freezing?
Fat-freezing (cryolipolysis) reduces fat by cooling it to injury; Onda does it by heating selectively — and the differences follow from the mechanism. Freezing treats one applicator-shaped zone per placement and leaves the skin untouched, so significant reductions can reveal looseness; Onda's handpiece moves continuously over the area, distributes treatment evenly and tightens as it reduces.
Two further practical differences. Onda sessions are shorter per area and the post-treatment sensation is mild warmth rather than the numbness and delayed aching many freezing patients describe. And the rare freezing-specific complication in which treated fat paradoxically enlarges is tied to cold-injury biology — a mechanism heat-based treatment simply does not share. Neither approach is magic; both demand honest candidacy, which is the section below.
When is liposuction the more honest answer?
When the volume is large or the deadline is short. Liposuction removes fat mechanically in one session — a real advantage when the target is substantial — at the cost of anaesthesia, compression garments and genuine recovery time. Onda removes less per session, requires a course, and asks for patience while lymphatic clearance works.
Our rule of thumb: comfortably pinchable, localized fat on a stable-weight body is Onda territory; volumes beyond that deserve a surgical consultation, and we will say so rather than sell sessions into a job they cannot finish — the same honesty documented in when not to treat. Non-surgical does not mean universally sufficient, and pretending otherwise wastes your money first.
A session runs thirty to sixty minutes, warm rather than painful, with no downtime after.
Which areas respond best at The Boom in Busan?
The classic Onda map: lower and upper abdomen, flanks, outer and inner thighs, and upper arms — areas where fat is subcutaneous, pinchable and stubbornly local. Cellulite-prone zones on the thighs and buttocks gain the texture benefit specifically, since Coolwaves address the fibrous architecture as well as the fat volume.
What Onda does not treat: visceral fat — the deeper abdominal fat behind the muscle wall that no external device reaches — and it is not a weight-loss method in any form, a boundary we keep as plainly as what treatment cannot do
keeps it. If the tape measure problem is global rather than local, the honest first prescription is metabolic, not cosmetic.
How many sessions, and when do results appear at a Korean skin clinic?
Plan on a course of four, spaced about four weeks apart — enough interval for each session's clearance to progress before the next adds to it. Visible change typically starts around weeks six to eight and consolidates by week twelve after the final session; photographs at fixed angles, which we take as standard, tell the story more honestly than daily mirror checks.
Expect variance and distrust anyone who does not say so: response differs with fat-layer thickness, area and individual clearance. The realistic promise is a measurable, natural-looking reduction in a targeted zone with improved skin quality — assessed properly at review, the same discipline as how long results actually last
applies across our menu.
What does a session actually feel like at a Busan skin clinic?
Warm — genuinely, that is the sensation. The operator moves the cooled handpiece in slow passes over the marked area for thirty to sixty minutes depending on zone size; patients describe deep warmth with occasional hot moments that the cooling immediately tempers. No anaesthesia, no needles, no compression garment afterwards.
Downtime is functionally zero: mild redness or warmth for a few hours, tenderness like a light workout for a day or two in some patients, and no restriction on returning to work, walking out to Jeonpo Cafe Street or flying the next morning — Onda sits comfortably inside the no-downtime menu. Hydration and normal activity support lymphatic clearance; nothing else is required of you.
Who is a good candidate — and who is not?
Good candidates share three traits: localized, pinchable subcutaneous fat; body weight that has been stable, because weight swings
overwrite contouring in either direction; and expectations calibrated to reduction, not transformation. Within those lines, Onda performs consistently and the before-and-after archive shows it.
Poor candidates deserve the same clarity: significant overall weight to lose, visceral-dominant abdomens, pregnancy, and anyone wanting a single-session transformation before an event next week — the timeline physics simply refuse. Candidacy is exactly what the consultation assesses, in the manner of how a Korean consultation works, and photographs by message get you a preliminary answer before you travel a single station.
What does Onda cost, and how do you start?
Onda at The Boom runs from ₩100,000 per session, published like everything else — most patients plan the course of four, and the exact figure for your areas is quoted in writing at consultation with nothing added later, per the no-upsell policy. The full body programme, with Onda's place in it, is laid out on the body contouring hub
and the pricing page.
Starting is one message: photos of the area on WhatsApp, your rough goal, and any date constraints. The clinic is registered Foreigner-Friendly, open late Tue & Thu, Monday to Saturday, less than a minute from Seomyeon Station Exit 1, two from Seomyeon Station Exit 7, six from Lotte Department Store Busan Main, eight from Jeonpo Cafe Street — inside Seomyeon Medical Street, with the deeper library waiting in the Knowledge Center
and real outcomes on the before and after page.

Good to know
Questions patients ask our Busan skin clinic first
1
Does Onda hurt, and is any anaesthesia needed?
No anaesthesia — the sensation is deep warmth from the moving handpiece, tempered continuously by contact cooling. Occasional hot moments pass immediately, and most patients rate it comfortable enough to read through.
2
How many Onda sessions will I actually need?
Plan on four, spaced about four weeks apart. Smaller areas occasionally satisfy with three; asking one session to do the whole job misreads how lymphatic clearance works, and we will say so upfront.
3
When will I see the result?
Change typically begins around weeks six to eight and consolidates by week twelve after your final session — fat is cleared metabolically, not removed on the bed. Fixed-angle photos at review show it more honestly than daily mirrors.
4
How is Onda different from CoolSculpting-style fat freezing?
Mechanism and side effects. Freezing injures fat with cold in fixed applicator zones and does nothing for skin; Onda heats fat selectively with moving Coolwaves, tightens skin as it reduces, and avoids the cold-injury biology behind freezing's rare paradoxical enlargement cases.
5
Can Onda help me lose weight?
No — Onda contours localized, pinchable fat on a stable-weight body. It does not reach visceral fat and does not move the scale meaningfully. If the goal is overall weight, that conversation comes first and we will have it honestly.
6
Is there any downtime after a session?
Functionally none — a few hours of warmth or mild redness, sometimes a day of workout-like tenderness. Work, walking and next-morning flights all proceed normally, with no garments or restrictions.
7
Are the results permanent?
Cleared fat cells do not return, but remaining ones still respond to weight change — so results last as long as your weight stays stable. Maintenance sessions exist but are optional, not built into the price.
8
How do I find out if my area is suitable before visiting?
Message photos of the area on WhatsApp with your goal. The doctor gives a preliminary candidacy answer and a written price for your zones before you book anything — the published per-session price is the starting point.
