StarLux IPL in Busan Seomyeon, the broad pass for mixed complexions.
Lasers aim one wavelength at one target. IPL sends a filtered band that pigment and vessels both absorb, treating a whole area in a single pass — the efficient answer for faces where sun spots and redness accumulated together. ₩200,000 per session at our Busan, Korea clinic. English, 日本語 and 中文 consults. Medically reviewed by Dr. Jeong Heon Lee, MD.

Does This Sound Familiar?
What Busan patients ask before booking IPL.
IPL or laser — which does my face actually need?
Why is the no-tan rule stricter for IPL than for other treatments?
Will my spots get darker before they get better?
Is IPL safe on Asian and darker skin?
Can it treat melasma?
All five come up most weeks in Busan. The sections below answer them in order — where broadband beats a single wavelength, the tanning risk explained honestly, the darkening phase, the skin-type caution, and a direct answer on melasma.

What Is IPL?
A band of light, not a single wavelength.
Intense pulsed light is not a laser. A laser emits one wavelength aimed at one absorber; IPL emits a broad spectrum, filtered to the band relevant for a given target. Because both melanin and haemoglobin absorb within that band, one pass addresses pigment and vascular components together across the whole treated area.
That breadth is its strength and its limit. For a face carrying scattered sun spots and background redness together, IPL is efficient in a way single-wavelength lasers are not. For a single stubborn vessel or a consolidated deep spot, a dedicated laser clears more per session. At our Busan, Korea clinic it is ₩200,000 per session on the published list, and the exam names which approach your face actually needs.
How It Works
The science, without the hype.
Filtered broadband light — here is what it reaches and what it does not.
01
Filtered spectrum
Cut-off filters shape the output to the band that suits the target, rather than emitting one fixed wavelength.
02
Dual absorption
Melanin and haemoglobin both absorb within the band, so pigment and redness are addressed in the same pass.
03
Whole-area coverage
Large handpiece area treats a full cheek or décolletage efficiently rather than lesion by lesion.
04
Surface-weighted effect
Energy is absorbed relatively superficially, which is why IPL excels on surface pigment and defers on deep targets.
What IPL Treats
Mixed, scattered, and superficial.
The examination separates broad mixed damage from single targets — IPL serves the first.

Your Visit, Step by Step
Six steps at our Busan clinic, twenty to thirty minutes per pass.
01
Skin type and target read
The doctor reads skin type and separates surface from deep targets at our Busan clinic — IPL is skin-type sensitive in a way lasers are less so.
02
Tan check
Recent sun exposure is checked directly, and treatment is postponed if there is any — this rule is not negotiable.
03
Photos and course plan
Fixed-light photos, then filter, settings, session count and price in writing.
04
The pass
Cooled gel and a large handpiece across the treated area — twenty to thirty minutes with a snapping warmth.
05
The darkening phase
Treated spots go visibly darker for several days before flaking away — expected, and stated before booking.
06
Review and pace
Three to four weeks between sessions with photos at each — reviewed by message after you leave Busan.

When
What you will notice
What to do
Day 0–1
Mild flushing settles within hours; treated spots begin darkening noticeably.
SPF from the same day. No sauna, hot showers or hard training for 48 hours.
Day 2–7
Spots reach their darkest then flake away, taking pigment with them.
Do not scrub or pick — let flakes shed. Make-up covers them meanwhile.
Week 2–4
The honest read: tone clearer, spots lighter or gone, redness a step calmer.
The fixed-light photo paces the next session.
Course end
Cumulatively evener complexion across three to five sessions.
Sun discipline decides how long it holds — more than any other variable.
Honest Suitability
Who it suits in Busan — and who should wait.
A good fit if you…
Scattered sun spots and background redness accumulated together
Large areas such as décolletage and hands where lesion-by-lesion work is impractical
Lighter skin types where IPL is safest and most effective
Efficient whole-area treatment rather than targeted single-lesion work
Busan visitors — sessions are same-day with flaking travelling under make-up
Better to wait if you…
Pregnancy — deferred as standard
Any recent sun exposure or tan — postponed without exception, however inconvenient
Darker skin types where melanin competition raises burn risk — assessed individually and often declined
Melasma — IPL heat can worsen it, and we route melasma to safer protocols
After your treatment
SPF daily from the same day, without exception
Let darkened spots flake naturally — no scrubbing or picking
No sauna, hot showers or hard training for 48 hours
Fixed-light photos at each session referee the course
Honest limits
IPL is skin-type sensitive — darker and tanned skin carries genuine burn risk, and we decline rather than gamble
Melasma commonly worsens with IPL heat, so it is treated elsewhere on the menu
Deep or consolidated targets clear better under dedicated laser wavelengths
Our Medical Team
Why is the no-tan rule stricter for IPL than for other treatments?
Because IPL cannot distinguish your tan from your target. Broadband light is absorbed by melanin wherever it sits, so a recent tan turns your entire epidermis into an absorber competing with the spot we are aiming at — which raises the energy needed for effect while simultaneously raising the risk of burning the surface. That combination produces the blistering and pigment injuries IPL is occasionally blamed for, and almost all of them trace back to treating tanned skin. At our Busan clinic recent sun means the session is postponed, and I will not negotiate that even with a flight booked.

From the Founder
Read and treated in person by one of our doctors.
IPL is the treatment I decline most often, and that is a compliment to the device rather than a criticism. Used on the right skin with no tan, it is efficient and satisfying. Used on the wrong skin because a patient was insistent, it is the one machine on my floor that can genuinely injure someone.

Quick Answers
IPL or laser — which does my face actually need?
Count your targets. If your complaint is scattered — several sun spots plus some background redness across a whole cheek — broadband treats all of it per pass and finishes efficiently. If your complaint is specific — one stubborn vessel, one consolidated dark spot, true rosacea — a dedicated wavelength clears more per session and IPL will leave you partly satisfied. At our Busan clinic the reading counts targets before recommending, and mixed faces with a dominant single problem often get the laser first and IPL afterwards for the remainder.
Can it treat melasma?
It is generally the wrong tool, and I say that plainly because IPL is still widely sold for melasma. The heat delivered by broadband light frequently aggravates melasma, producing a rebound worse than the starting point — and melasma is chronic enough that a rebound can take many months to settle. At our Busan clinic melasma is screened for before any IPL is discussed, and confirmed cases are routed to gentle toning protocols, photoprotection and often topical treatment instead. Anyone offering IPL as a melasma solution is worth a second opinion.
Everything Else You Might Ask
StarLux IPL questions in Busan.
₩200,000 per session on the published list, with a three-to-five-session course written at the exam. No foreigner markup.
Yes — English, Japanese (日本語) and Chinese (中文). We are a 5-minute walk from Seomyeon Station Exit 2, and course photos are reviewed on WhatsApp after you fly home from Busan.
No. A laser emits one wavelength; IPL emits a filtered broad spectrum, so pigment and vessels are treated together across a whole area rather than one target at a time.
Scattered sun spots, uneven tone and diffuse redness across whole areas including face, décolletage and hands.
A snapping warmth with each pulse under cooled gel — brief and tolerable for most patients without numbing.
Yes, and that is the treatment working. Spots darken for several days then flake away, taking pigment with them.
Flushing that settles within hours, then three to seven days of darkened spots flaking. Make-up covers them throughout.
For lighter Asian skin types with no tan, yes with careful settings. Darker types carry genuine burn risk and are assessed individually or declined at our Busan clinic.
Broadband light is absorbed by melanin anywhere, so a tan competes with the target and raises burn risk sharply. Recent sun means postponement, without exception.
It is generally the wrong tool — IPL heat commonly worsens melasma. We screen for it and route confirmed cases to gentler protocols instead.
Three to five, three to four weeks apart, written before you start.
Yes — sun-damaged tone books steadily among men at our Busan clinic, with beard-zone settings adjusted for hair absorption.
Yes — you can fly out of Busan the same day. Flaking spots travel under make-up and SPF.
Sun and self-tanner for two weeks without exception, retinoids for a few days, and make-up on the day.
Scrubbing or picking flaking spots, sauna and hot showers for 48 hours, and unprotected sun throughout the course.
A visibly evener complexion with lighter spots and calmer redness across three to five sessions in fixed-light photos. What no honest clinic promises: melasma improved by IPL, safe treatment of tanned skin, or deep targets cleared by broadband light.
