Mounjaro in Korea for international patients: the rules, the visit, the pharmacy.

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine in Korea, and a visitor gets it the same way a Korean patient does: an in-person assessment, a criterion met, a month at a time, dispensed by a pharmacy. Here is the whole process at The Boom in Seomyeon, Busan, from the first message to the pen in your bag at Gimhae.

Searches for Mounjaro in Korea have grown faster than any other treatment query reaching our Busan skin clinic, and most of them arrive with the wrong picture: a counter, a box, a card machine. The medicine is tirzepatide, a once-weekly GLP-1 and GIP injection for weight management, and Korea regulates it as what it is, a prescription-only drug. This guide is the version of the rules our coordinators send over WhatsApp before anyone books a flight to Busan for it, including the part where the answer is sometimes no.

What international patients ask about Mounjaro in Korea
  • Can I just buy Mounjaro at a Korean pharmacy with my passport?
  • Do I have to see a doctor in person, or is a video call enough?
  • What BMI do I need, and will you actually weigh me?
  • How much can I take home, and will customs let me?
  • I am already on it. Can you continue my dose without restarting?

All five come up every week. This page answers them in order, honestly.

What are the Korean rules for Mounjaro, actually?

Four rules decide everything, and The Boom Dermatology in Busan applies them as written. In person. A Korean prescription for tirzepatide follows a face-to-face assessment by a doctor; a video consultation, a form or a photo does not produce one. Criteria. The medicine is licensed for weight management in adults with a body mass index of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition — hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea — and a doctor who prescribes outside that is prescribing off-label, which we do not. Pharmacy. The clinic writes the prescription; a licensed pharmacy dispenses the pens at the pharmacy's price; the clinic sells nothing and earns nothing on the medicine. One month. A prescription covers one month, four pens at one dose, and the next month follows a review.

None of this is a Busan quirk or a foreigner rule. It is the same for a Korean office worker from across the road, and it is the reason a clinic in Seomyeon that offers to "sell" you Mounjaro by message is a clinic to walk away from, because the box you would be sold is the one thing you cannot verify.

Who qualifies for Mounjaro in Busan, and who is told no before flying?

The criteria are a measurement, not a conversation. At the first message our Busan skin clinic asks for height, weight, any conditions and current medications, and does the arithmetic before you book anything: a BMI of 26 with no weight-related condition is a no, said in the first reply, so nobody flies to Busan for a refusal. A BMI of 31 is an assessment, with the decision made in the room.

Some patients are declined whatever the number. Pregnancy, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy in the next two months. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2. A history of pancreatitis. Type 1 diabetes, or insulin without a prescriber managing it. Anyone who wants pens for someone else, which comes up more than you would think and is always declined. The Mounjaro page lists the full set.

The first message is the screen. Send height, weight, conditions and medications, and the reply says whether an assessment is worth the trip — before you spend anything on it.

What does the Mounjaro visit in Seomyeon, Busan look like?

Thirty to forty minutes with Dr. Kim Dong Hyun, a board-certified internal medicine specialist, which is the specialty that manages metabolic medicines and the reason a skin clinic in Busan can prescribe this one properly. You are weighed and measured; a reported number is not enough. The history covers your weight over time, diets and medicines tried, the conditions that rule the drug out, and what else you take, because a few medicines interact. Bloods are ordered where the history asks for them, with results in a day or two, and are not ordered as a ritual.

If the criteria are met the prescription is written for one month at the starting dose of 2.5 mg weekly, or, for patients already established on the medicine, at their current dose. The first injection can be given in the clinic so you have done it once with someone watching; the pen is simple and most patients manage the rest at home. You leave with the eating advice that reduces the nausea of the first weeks, the symptoms that mean stop and call, and a WhatsApp thread that answers questions in English.

The rest of the visit is what makes the clinic a skin clinic: fast weight loss empties the face, and the doctor who prescribes also plans the face afterwards, which is covered at the end of this page.

How does the pharmacy step work, and why does the clinic sell no pens?

You take the prescription to the pharmacy, next door to our Busan skin clinic, and pay the pharmacy for the pens at the pharmacy's price, which is set by dose and by the pharmacy and not by us; the cost guide explains what a month costs in Korea and why it differs from home. The pharmacist hands you a sealed box with four pens and the Korean leaflet; ask for the dose to be written in English on the box if you want it, and the clinic's record of it is in English anyway.

The separation matters for two reasons. It is the law, which is reason enough. And it removes the incentive: a clinic that sells the pens earns more when it prescribes more, and a clinic that does not has nothing to gain from a prescription you should not have. The Boom earns the consultation fee and nothing else from the medicine.

Already on Mounjaro at home: can it be continued in Busan?

Yes, and this is the most common international request. Bring evidence of your current dose — a prescription, a pharmacy label, the pen itself or a photo of it — and the assessment is done as for any patient, with the prescription written at your current dose rather than restarting you at 2.5 mg. One month at a time, as for everyone. Expats in Busan and visitors between supplies at home are the two groups our Seomyeon skin clinic sees most, and both are routine.

What cannot be done: continuing a dose on your word alone, prescribing more than a month, or prescribing for a travelling companion who has not been assessed. The rules are not negotiable and we would rather say so in a message than in the room.

Can you take Mounjaro home from Korea, and how: supply, cooling, customs?

Supply. One month per prescription is what Korean rules allow, so one month is what you leave with; a second month needs a second assessment, which some repeat visitors to Busan build into a later trip. Cooling. The pens are stored refrigerated; the manufacturer's label allows a limited period out of the fridge at up to 30°C, so a short flight with a cool bag is fine and a hot car is not. Check the label on your box for the exact period, and keep the pens in hand luggage, never in the hold. Customs. Carrying a personal supply of a prescription medicine with its prescription is permitted by most countries, but the rule is your destination's, not Korea's: carry the prescription and the pharmacy receipt, keep the pens in their labelled box, and check your own border agency's page before you fly. Our coordinators in Busan cannot speak for another country's customs and will not pretend to.

Step Where What you leave with
Message WhatsApp, in English Whether an assessment is worth the trip
Assessment The Boom, Seomyeon, Busan A prescription for one month, or a clear no
Dispensing Pharmacy next door Four pens, sealed, at the pharmacy price
First injection The clinic, if you want it Shown once; the rest at home
Follow-up In person, or by message for established patients Dose reviewed; the face planned as the weight settles

What about side effects, follow-up and the face afterwards?

Nausea in the first weeks and for a few days after each dose increase is the rule rather than the exception, with reduced appetite, which is the point, and constipation or loose stools. Most patients settle; the eating advice reduces it; a dose is held rather than raised when it does not. Severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or signs of dehydration are reasons to stop and call, in Busan or at home. The follow-up at the next visit reviews dose, weight and side effects, and decides the step-up.

And the face. Fast weight loss empties the temples and cheeks and loosens the jawline before the body catches up, the look the internet calls Ozempic face. At The Boom the doctor who prescribes the medicine is also the one who treats that, once the weight has settled for two to three months: Sculptra or a little filler for the volume, HIFU or RF for the laxity, on the Mounjaro face page. The pockets the medicine does not reach, the double chin above all, are handled with fat-dissolving injections timed to the dose. One doctor, one record, one plan, which is the quiet advantage of getting the medicine from a skin clinic in Busan rather than a counter anywhere.

Questions patients ask our Busan skin clinic first

1

Can a foreigner get Mounjaro in Korea?

Yes, on the same terms as a Korean patient: an in-person assessment by a doctor, the BMI criteria met, one month per prescription, dispensed by a pharmacy. The Boom Dermatology in Busan does this every week.

2

Can I buy Mounjaro at a Korean pharmacy with my passport?

No. It is prescription-only; a pharmacy dispenses it against a doctor's prescription, and no passport changes that.

3

Is a video consultation enough?

No. The assessment is in person at our Seomyeon skin clinic; you are weighed and measured, and the history is taken face to face.

4

What BMI do I need?

Thirty or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia or sleep apnoea.

5

How much can I take home?

One month per prescription, in hand luggage with the prescription and the pharmacy receipt; your own country's customs rules decide what you may bring in.

6

Can you continue my current dose?

Yes, with evidence of it, and after the same assessment; you are continued, not restarted.

7

Does the clinic sell the pens?

No. The pharmacy next door dispenses them at its price; the clinic earns nothing on the medicine.

8

What about my face after the weight loss?

The prescribing doctor plans it: Sculptra, filler and lifting devices once the weight settles, at our Busan skin clinic.
