What Is Helios?

Nanosecond precision, and a protocol that endured.

Helios is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser: nanosecond pulses at 1064nm that pass deep with low surface absorption, and at 532nm for shallower pigment. Q-switching means the energy is released in an extremely short burst — long enough to be thermal, short enough to be selective.

That combination built the original Korean laser toning protocol, and it still delivers what made it famous: repeated low-fluence passes that lift diffuse pigment, calm background tone and visibly refine pores. Picosecond platforms fragment pigment more efficiently, but Q-switched toning retains a distinct character on tone and pore work that keeps it on our menu at ₩200,000 per session, assigned by case at our Busan, Korea clinic.

Is Q-switched outdated now that picosecond exists?

No — it is more specialised than it used to be, which is a different thing. Picosecond platforms fragment consolidated pigment and tattoo ink more efficiently, and for those targets I reach for pico without hesitation. But the classic Q-switched toning protocol has two decades of clinical record on exactly the job it was built for, and on diffuse tone and pore refinement it still produces a character of result that patients recognise. At our Busan clinic both sit on the menu because they answer different questions, and the exam names which question you are asking.

Can toning really refine pores?

It refines how pores read, which is worth stating precisely. Sub-threshold thermal stimulation from repeated toning passes tightens the surrounding tissue and evens the light scattering across the skin, so pores photograph smaller and the surface looks more refined. What it does not do is rebuild a structurally slackened pore wall — that is collagen work, and RF microneedling is the honest tool for it. At our Busan clinic the pore reading decides which of the two you actually need, and mixed cases sequence both.

How does Helios fit alongside the pico platforms you run?

By target rather than by ranking. Diffuse tone, pore appearance and the classic toning rhythm sit comfortably with Q-switched work. Consolidated discrete pigment, tattoo ink and cases wanting the lowest possible thermal load go to picosecond. There is honest overlap in the middle where either serves, and there the exam picks by your skin's previous response and by price — including recommending the ₩20,000 entry platform when a diffuse-tone case does not need this one.
