What is Mono threads, and what does it do?

Mono threads are the fine, smooth polydioxanone threads of 5-0 and 6-0 gauge, the thickness measure of surgical suture, with no barbs, placed by the dozen in a crosshatch mesh just under the skin of an area, the cheeks, the jawline, the neck, the forehead, the under-eye. They lift nothing on the day. What they do is leave a scaffold of dissolvable thread through the dermis, and as the skin builds collagen around each one over the following months the area tightens, thickens and reads firmer and smoother: crepe softens, a soft jawline sharpens a little, the neck looks less lined. It is the thread equivalent of a collagen stimulator, placed as lines rather than droplets, and it is often compared to one.

At Boom Dermatology, mono threads are quoted at the consultation by count, typically thirty to a hundred for an area, and assigned honestly: for laxity without a drop, for texture and firmness, for the neck and forehead where barbed threads do not belong, and for patients who want a skin change rather than a repositioning. For a face that has actually dropped, the barbed PDO or MINT lift; for firmness without needles, RF or HIFU; for the places mono threads are oversold, the questions below.

What Busan patients ask before Mono threads
  • How is this different from a MINT or barbed lift?
  • How many threads does a real plan use?
  • Mono threads or skin boosters for texture: which wins?
  • Where do mono threads shine, and where are they oversold?
  • How long until I see firmness, and how long does it last?

All of these come up most weeks at our Seomyeon skin clinic. The page answers them in order.

03 The visit

What happens at a Mono threads session in Seomyeon?

This is how a Mono threads visit runs at Boom Dermatology, a skin clinic in Seomyeon, Busan, from the first message to the review.

1

Message first

Front and side photos in daylight, no make-up, and what has dropped. The doctor replies with whether threads fit, the likely type and count, and the VAT-included quote.

2

Consultation and marking

The drop is mapped with you upright; vectors, thread type and count are drawn on your face and written on your record with the quote.

3

Local anaesthetic

Entry points numbed; forty minutes from marking to the last thread.

4

Threads placed by the doctor

Each thread passed along its vector with a cannula, set and trimmed; the lift is checked in the mirror before the next.

5

Out the door

Mild swelling and tightness; soft food and small expressions for three days; sleep on your back for a few nights; fly out of Busan after 48 hours.

6

Two-week review

Swelling gone, the lift settled; the photo goes on your record, by WhatsApp if you have left Busan, and the maintenance plan is set.

How does Boom Dermatology plan Mono threads?

Mono threads are planned by area, density and count; the count is written before the quote and the mesh is drawn on your face.

A mesh, not a vector

Dozens of short threads crosshatched through the dermis of an area; no barbs, no pull.

Thirty to a hundred

By area and laxity; written before the quote.

Two to three months to firm

Collagen builds around each thread; firmness peaks at three months and holds six to nine.

07 Questions, answered properly

How is this different from a MINT or barbed lift?

Barbed threads reposition tissue: a few long threads on vectors, a lift on the day. Mono threads reposition nothing: dozens of short smooth threads in a mesh, a firming over months. One is for a face that has dropped, the other for skin that has loosened. At Boom Dermatology the consultation decides which you have, and a face that has dropped is not sold mono threads.

How many threads does a real plan use?

Thirty to fifty for the cheeks or jawline, fifty to a hundred for the neck, twenty to forty for the forehead or under-eye. The count is by area and laxity, written before the quote; fewer than a menu "per 10 threads" price makes it sound.

Mono threads or skin boosters for texture: which wins?

For crepe and firmness in a defined area, they are close, and a stimulator is often simpler: one session of PLLA or PCL, no threads to feel, a similar three-month timeline. Mono threads win on the neck and jawline where a line of scaffold does more than droplets, and where a patient wants no injectable product. Our Seomyeon skin clinic often uses both: threads for the structure, a booster for the surface.

Where do mono threads shine, and where are they oversold?

They shine on the neck, the jawline edge, crepey cheeks and the forehead: firmness, texture, a sharper edge. They are oversold as a lift, as a nose job, as a cure for jowls; none of which a smooth thread can do. If you have been quoted mono threads for a drop, ask for the barbed thread or the energy device instead.

How long until I see firmness, and how long does it last?

Six weeks for the first firmness, three months for the peak, six to nine months of hold, then a repeat or a stimulator to extend it. Patients at Boom Dermatology in Busan on a two-visit plan often do threads on the first trip and a booster on the second.
