What is Coretox, and what does it do?

Coretox is a botulinum toxin type A from Medytox, the Korean manufacturer behind Meditoxin and Innotox. What sets it apart is the formulation: the 150 kDa core neurotoxin without the complexing proteins of conventional products, and a stabiliser that is not derived from human albumin. The complexing proteins are the part of a conventional toxin most associated with the immune system forming antibodies after repeated treatment; removing them is the same logic as Xeomin, at a Korean price. Onset and duration are those of the category: three to five days, three to four months on the face.

What does protein-free mean, and does it matter?

A conventional toxin is a complex of the active neurotoxin plus accessory proteins that play no role in the effect but can be recognised by the immune system. Over years of repeated dosing, a small proportion of patients develop antibodies that shorten or blunt the result. Removing the accessory proteins removes that trigger. My Botox seems to wear off faster than it used to. Is Coretox the answer?

Possibly.
