What is Picolo, and what does it do?

Picolo is a picosecond laser with 1064 nm and 532 nm, made in Korea. Picosecond means the pulse lasts trillionths of a second: the energy arrives before the pigment can heat the skin around it, so the particle shatters mechanically rather than thermally, into fragments small enough for the skin to clear in weeks. That gives two things over Q-switched toning: less heat in the skin, so less risk on Asian and melasma-prone skin at equal effect, and faster clearing of consolidated spots and freckles. Picolo Premium is the full-face toning protocol; Picolo Fraxel uses a fractional handpiece that focuses the same pulses into micro-columns for texture, pores and acne scars with a day or two of downtime.

At Boom Dermatology in Seomyeon, Picolo is the entry picosecond platform alongside PicoHi, priced at ₩165,000 so a course costs no more than Q-switched. It is the device for freckles, defined sun spots and pigment that Helios has plateaued on; the Fraxel handpiece is the lightest texture pass on the list. Patients who ask for PicoWay, PicoPlus or PicoCare are shown what we use instead.

What Busan patients ask before Picolo
  • Is picosecond really better, or just newer?
  • Picolo or PicoHi: you have two pico lasers. Which?
  • What is Picolo Fraxel and who is it for?
  • How many sessions for freckles?
  • Is it safe for melasma?

All of these come up most weeks at our Seomyeon skin clinic. The page answers them in order.

02 Who it suits

Who is Picolo for?

Good candidates

  • Freckles and defined sun spots
  • Pigment that Q-switched toning has plateaued on
  • Melasma-prone skin wanting lower heat per pulse, at gentle settings
  • Texture, pores and shallow scars with minimal downtime (Fraxel)
  • Visitors with limited time who need a shorter course

We will suggest something else

  • Diffuse dullness with no spots, where Helios 4 or Brighton does the job
  • Deep pitted scars, which want Potenza
  • Tanned or sunburned skin; wait four weeks
  • Isotretinoin recently; pregnancy
  • An event inside two days after Fraxel

03 The visit

What happens at a Picolo session in Seomyeon?

This is how a Picolo visit runs at Boom Dermatology, a skin clinic in Seomyeon, Busan, from the first message to the review.

1

Message first

A daylight photo without make-up and what bothers you. The doctor replies with the device, the likely session count and the VAT-included price.

2

Consultation

Pigment is separated from redness, melasma is screened for, previous lasers and sun exposure are asked. Device and settings go on your record.

3

Cleanse and cool

Make-up off, eye shields on; cooling gel or numbing cream depending on the device.

4

Test pulses, then the pass

A few test pulses on the jawline to read the response, then the full pass by the doctor.

5

Out the door

Sunscreen before you leave; make-up from the same evening for toning, the next day for vascular work.

6

Review and rhythm

A photo at two to four weeks sets the interval; a review at the fifth session decides continue, stop or switch.

How does Boom Dermatology dose Picolo?

Picolo is dosed by wavelength, fluence and handpiece; toning stays below the whitening endpoint, Fraxel density is set to the texture.

Picosecond 1064 nm

Mechanical shattering with little heat; the toning pass for Asian skin.

532 nm on defined spots

Freckles and shallow sun spots after test pulses; they darken, then flake.

Fraxel handpiece

Focused micro-columns for texture and pores; one to two days of redness.

07 Questions, answered properly

Is picosecond really better, or just newer?

Better for one job: consolidated pigment and ink, which it shatters finer with less heat, so Asian skin is at lower risk and the course is shorter. Not better for diffuse tone, where low-fluence Q-switched toning is as good and cheaper. At Boom Dermatology both tiers are on the list and the pigment reading, not the age of the machine, decides.

Picolo or PicoHi?

Interchangeable for most toning; both are Korean picosecond platforms at ₩165,000 for the premium toning session. PicoHi adds a dual-toning protocol at ₩220,000 and a fractional mode at ₩275,000; Picolo Fraxel at ₩330,000 is the stronger fractional pass. The doctor at our Seomyeon skin clinic uses whichever is free when the protocol is the same, and chooses by handpiece when it is not.

What is Picolo Fraxel?

The same picosecond pulses through a fractional lens that focuses them into micro-columns, creating tiny zones of remodelling under an intact surface. It treats texture, pores and shallow scars with one to two days of redness, the lightest fractional option here, and pairs with toning in the same visit for pigment and texture together.

How many sessions for freckles?

Three to five, three to four weeks apart, with 532 nm targeted pulses on the defined freckles and a 1064 nm pass for the background. Freckles darken for a few days after each session before flaking off lighter. Sun protection decides whether they stay away.

Is it safe for melasma?

At gentle settings, with spacing and sunscreen, picosecond 1064 nm is one of the lower-heat options for melasma; at freckle energies it is not. The doctor at Boom Dermatology in Busan screens for melasma first, and uses the low-fluence protocol with Sylfirm X alongside, stopping at once if a patch darkens.
