What is Thermage FLX, and what does it do?

Thermage FLX is the fourth generation of the Solta Medical radiofrequency platform that defined non-surgical skin tightening. A single large electrode delivers monopolar RF through the full depth of the skin while the tip is cooled before, during and after each pulse, heating the dermis and the fibrous septae beneath it to the temperature at which collagen contracts and new collagen is triggered. The FLX generation added AccuREP, which tunes the energy to the skin under the tip on every shot, a 4.0 cm² tip that covers the face faster, and a vibrating handpiece that makes the session far more comfortable than the Thermage of a decade ago.

It is the once-a-year treatment for loose, crepey, slightly sagging skin on the cheeks, jawline and neck. Downtime after Thermage FLX, and flying home

Thermage FLX has no downtime. Pinkness and warmth fade within hours; a little puffiness the next morning is uncommon. Flying the same evening is fine; sauna and hard exercise wait 48 hours.

What changed with the FLX generation, and does it matter?

Three things that you feel in the chair and see at three months. AccuREP reads the impedance of the skin under the tip on every shot and adjusts the energy, so delivery is more even and hot spots are rarer. The 4.0 cm² tip covers the face in fewer pulses, which is why 300 shots now does what 400 used to. And the vibrating handpiece turns the old "agonising" Thermage into a session most patients at our Seomyeon skin clinic rate two to four out of ten. The physics has not changed; the consistency has.

Which layer does radiofrequency actually reach?

Monopolar RF heats the full thickness of the dermis and the fibrous septae in the fat beneath it, roughly to 3–4 mm, while the surface is protected by cooling. That is the layer responsible for skin firmness and texture. It does not reach the SMAS, the muscular-fascial layer at 4.5 mm that ultrasound targets, which is why a dropped jawline wants Ultherapy and loose skin wants Thermage, and why many faces get both.

Is Oligio the same thing at a third of the price?

Very nearly, for most faces. Oligio is Korean monopolar RF with its own temperature sensor; the result at three months is hard to tell apart. Thermage keeps the longest published follow-up, a dedicated eye tip and the vibration. At Boom Dermatology we offer both in the same room and tell you which we would choose for your skin. For a first RF session the answer is usually Oligio; for a patient who wants the original once a year, it is FLX.

How many Thermage shots do I need, and who decides?

The doctor decides at the consultation, after pressing the tissue and drawing the grid. Three hundred covers the full face once and is right for thin or small faces and early laxity; six hundred adds a second lower-face pass and is the common choice over forty; nine hundred adds the neck. A quote without a shot count is not a Thermage quote, and the count is written on your record in English.

When will I actually see the result, and how long does it last?

A mild tightening is visible when you leave, from immediate collagen contraction. The real change comes from new collagen and builds between month two and month six. Most patients at our Busan clinic repeat Thermage once a year, or alternate it with XERF or Oligio, and use Shurink in between for the jawline.
